Aranea’s Smudging Spray Recipe

Do you have sensitive smoke alarms? Do you or a housemate have allergies or other sensitivities to smoke? Do you just dislike burning plant material inside your house? (That’s totally legit!) Whatever your reasons for avoiding smudging, feel free to use my recipe for a smudging spray that is a great substitute and can be used for multiple purposes.

Here’s what you’ll need:
  • 8oz spray bottle** (I reused a cleaned, empty hair product bottle)
  • 7.5oz of distilled or filtered water (if you don’t have access, tap is fine, just let it sit out for a few hours to off-gas)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • Choose 2-3 from the following essential oils:
    • Sage or Clary sage
    • Tea tree
    • Peppermint
    • Lemon or Bergamot
    • Eucalyptus
    • Rosemary
    • Basil
    • Cypress
    • Juniper
    • Lavender
(oil combo suggestions: lemon sage, rosemary juniper, tea tree peppermint, lavender eucalyptus)

Fill bottle halfway with distilled water. Add the salt. Put 5 drops of each oil into the water. Close the lid and shake gently. Fill the bottle with water the rest of the way. Close lid and shake a bit more. Spray around your altar space, on clothing or other fabrics, on yourself, or in any area of your home that needs cleansing.

**You can use a smaller or larger bottle, just decrease or increase the drops of oil you add so that the scent is not too strong or weak.
